Everyone ’round the campground today, from hosts to workampers to guests, was talking about the weather. In one way it’s just idle chit-chat, but it’s also how this nomadic community takes care of its own.
We look out for each other.
Tonight and tomorrow we’ll have storms and a good bit of rain. Bitter cold will arrive by daybreak Sunday, and all who inhabit the park — which is nearly full on this New Year’s Eve, by the way — need to be ready for what’s coming this weekend and into next week.
We took advantage of today’s springlike tease (74°F and sunny) to, as advertised, top-off Ernie’s propane supply. The exercise isn’t necessarily pretty (pictured), but under the circumstances it’s necessary and relatively quick.
There were no hiccups today. We were parked again and had everything put back together by 1pm, even tidier than before.
While we were at it I got some routine maintenance done. I hit the stabilizing jacks with WD-40 and the door latch with silicone, and I dumped a healthy dose of fuel treatment into the 100-gallon tank. Ernie’s big diesel, dormant since the 12th of October, roared to life without hesitation and we let it idle awhile, over a half-hour, before backing it off the site. At the same time we fired up the generator and put a load on it for 25 minutes.
At the LP filling station on the other side of the campground, Ernie’s 38-gallon tank — which can be filled only to 80%, or 30.4 gallons — sucked up a whopping 19.6 gallons (83 pounds) of propane. Heading into a week-plus of actual winter weather, having a full load right now is a good feeling.
All systems go. One Happy New Year, comin’ right up.
