Well, it looks like Elon Musk will get Twitter. The Left is apoplectic. The Right is falling all over itself to applaud the buy. It’d be fair to say that many on the Right are rejoicing precisely because the Left is grieving.
Elon Musk is not a constitutional conservative. He’s not a Republican. He might be, in some ways, libertarian. He casts himself as a fierce defender of free speech and says that Twitter soon will reflect his passion — and that, dear hearts, is where we should direct our attention and (to the extent that he keeps his promise) our admiration.
No doubt about it, though, the progressive delirium is entertaining. The caterwauling isn’t confined to the liberal fringe, either — this is mainstream panic, coming from so-called “thought leaders.” High-profile leftists, bitter and entitled social-justice warriors, are unhinged over the prospect of Twitter without Thinkpol.
Why the irrational fear? Because racist. Because sexist. Because homophobic. Because democracy will die. Because Trump. (Natch.) A public forum without censorship — what progressives laughably call “guardrails” — is unthinkable, scary.
Exhibit A: On Monday Twitter‘s chief counsel, briefing corporate legal teams, ugly-cried while telling staff about the policy changes that presumably will follow Musk’s takeover.
Sorry, but I just can’t resist invoking The Cockroach Metaphor. See, roaches scatter when the lights come on because they’re vulnerable to predators if they can be seen. Progressives likewise are threatened by the light of free speech, knowing that they can’t survive opposing views.
What we’re seeing it now — leftist cockroaches scurrying for dark corners, terrified of the light.
Free speech is fundamental. More speech, even if it’s downright distasteful speech, always is better than less speech. Without that essential Liberty there’s no America.
And that’s why the Left — Democrats, socialists, The Woke Mob and other progressives — are scared to death. Their totalitarian aim to unmake America is threatened by free speech. Progressives can’t compete (much less win) in the marketplace of ideas, and they damned well know it.
They’re losing their minds because they’re losing their guardrails. Elon Musk will defund their Thought Police. No wonder they’re upset.
