Eat the cake

The title of today’s post echoes a popular aphorism urging us us to take a break from our day-to-day responsibilities and live a little. Splurge. Indulge. Stop taking everything so damned seriously and enjoy life.

Of course, there’s no reason the advice can’t be taken literally.

The online auction benefiting Carolyn’s Razorback Ribs ran all day yesterday, The virtual event attracted a total of 68 donated lots, from goodie baskets to oil changes to truckloads of gravel. Deb and I bid on several items, losing all but one — when the auction closed at 8pm last night, Deb had won a “triple chocolate cake” baked lovingly by Carolyn herself.

Pickup for everything was set for a two-hour window this morning at the local high school cafeteria. We drove over and collected our winnings from Carolyn’s daughter, Felicia, whom we’d met before at the restaurant. (She remembered us.) The cake, packaged in a large pastry box, must’ve weighed five pounds or more — dense, rich and positively decadent.

After swinging by Harps for a half-gallon of Blue Bell vanilla, we took the cake directly to The Mountain. Deb cut five pieces — one each for her cousin, his daughter and her boyfriend, and the two of us — and topped them with scoops of ice cream.

Her generous cuts were about what patrons of the restaurant would get, a portion that’s been known to take her three sittings to finish — in other words, they were huge.

And we still have half the cake left. It stayed behind with Deb’s cousin. We’ll attack it again tomorrow.

So yeah, today we ate the cake. It was amazing. Best of all, we were able to support neighbors who need help right now.

That might be as good as it gets.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
