We’re doin’ better, thanks

This has been a rough patch for Deb and me. Adept as we are at rolling through challenges and dispatching difficulty, we’re not accustomed to being sick. The last time was January of 2020, when Ubi Libertas Blog wasn’t around to report it.

Back then we had what we we’re still convinced was an early strain of WuFlu, before WuFlu was even a thing (much less a “pandemic”), and it was pretty bad. This time we’re sure it’s a 2023 variant of some sort, and it’s been no picnic.

Then again, maybe it’s just a typically severe winter cold. We’ll never know.

The weather hasn’t helped — a foot of snow, plus two days without shore power and a couple of mechanical issues. Now we’re looking at three days of off-and-on freezing rain and the threat of more power outages.

But here we are. We’re definitely on the mend. Our strength is returning to us, albeit slowly, and by the end of the week we expect to get back to our routine.

Topping our list is giving Smudge puppy more of the work she needs. We’ve done a damned good job, I think, of keeping her busy while we’ve been sick, but she deserves more than we’ve been able to give her this past week.

(That picture of our happy Heeler, by the way, doesn’t represent her life — recently we parked her there, leashed, for two minutes while we brought in groceries. Shortly after that we removed the divider and gave her the full use of her enclosure. Generally she’s in there only at night.)

Smudge’s first veterinary appointment has been pushed back again, this time until next Tuesday. Scout and Dipstick are doin’ just fine. So’s Ernie.

We’ll also resume progress toward building our Home on The Mountain. The architect is ready for us to review his foundation drawings, and we should be able to get over to his office this week to tweak (if necessary) and approve them. Then the work will be in the hands of our site contractor, who’s anxious to get started.

Weather permitting, of course.

US Route 65 northbound, not far from us, this morning. (Not our photo.)

And that’s the thing, really — between last week’s record-setting snow and this week’s icy glaze, nothin’ was gonna happen on the homesite anyway ’til the first or second week of February. So if Deb and I were pickin’ a time to be sick, we couldn’t’ve done much better than we did.

We really didn’t hold up the work.

All things considered, though, we’d prefer to feel better sooner rather than later. We already do.

(Just don’t look for a lot of personal news or current photos ’til we get back on the beam, ok?)

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
