Is this what you were lookin’ for?

Judging by how many views Ubi Libertas Blog logged yesterday — more than half-again what it usually does — I have a sneakin’ suspicion that some of you stopped by to see what I had to say about The Big News. I could be wrong. But as you know by now, I said nothing — I wanted to let things settle and percolate overnight before I weighed in.

The indictment was inevitable. I know I hedged my bets on that when I wrote about it ten days ago, but this is New York, after all, and in that politically putrid province there’s no way to assemble a grand jury of true Americans. So it was a fait accompli.

Trump’s formal response begins, “This is political persecution and election interference at the highest level in history.” Despite his well-known penchant for hyperbole, that’s an accurate statement. So are others’ takes that this prosecution is the stuff of banana republics, not the United States of America.

Perhaps the best commentary on the unprecedented indictment came from one Glenn Beck. I’ll confess to having had an on-again, off-again affair with Beck over the years, but I also will admit that he’s quite often right (to the point of being spooky). Tucker Carlson said as much himself in a glowing introduction of Beck on his program last night.

This, then, from Glenn Beck:

“What do you think this Donald Trump thing is really all about? The America that we knew, the ‘fundamental transformation’ that started in 2008, is finished.”

“What this is all about, I believe, is trying to inflame this country. They’ve wanted violence from the Right, from the beginning. They can’t wait. They need it.”

“They want you to strike out. Why? Because then they can close the cage.”

“The Bill of Rights is gone. Nobody is paying attention.”

“But here’s what they miss — Donald Trump is not even a person anymore. He is a symbol. He is a symbol of the average, everyday guy that keeps getting screwed every single time, watches other people screw up big banks, screw up their companies and get away with it. They see people all the time doing stuff that they know if they did, they’d be in prison for 20 years. But because they’re not [sic] part of the elite, they get away with it. Donald Trump has taken arrow after arrow.

“And that’s why this [donning a red “MAGA” hat] is how the average American feels tonight.”

That, my friends, is as well as it can be said. Beck recognizes the gravity of the moment, but he also knows — and has been saying for 15 years — that it’s our nation and its People, not Trump, that’s truly in peril.

Flip back through Ubi Libertas Blog and you’ll find that I’ve been saying the same things here.

America, as we knew it, is over. I hate being right about that.

Prepare. Gather. Put your affairs in order. Stand your ground — but if they mean to have a war….

That probably isn’t what you wanted to hear, but I hope it’s what you were lookin’ for.
