Heeler healed

Let’s start with good news — for the first time since May 16th, our happy Heeler is storming through life without a bandage on her right foreleg.

Deb and I judged Smudge’s incision healed a couple of days ago. Since then we’ve gradually given her more and more time without the dressing, and she impressed us by leaving the repaired injury alone. This morning we released her to be the no-limits Redneck Malinois she was born to be.

It’s great to have her back. Watching her dash around the homesite today was pure joy.

We all had a good day on The Mountain, welcomed by resident wildlife. There were deer, of course, and crows and rabbits. A skunk obviously was nearby, though unseen. Deb spied three scissortails. Ruby-throated hummingbirds sipped at our feeder. And for the first time, vivid indigo buntings paid us a visit.

This morning the Silverado’s bed and back seat held a half-dozen totes and twice that many boxes, so The Move continued. Deb resumed unpacking and nesting indoors. I resurrected our Mountain One trailcam with new batteries, then finished the exterior lighting, installing LEDs all ’round.

I had help from Deb on the lights. For some reason she didn’t quite trust me on a ladder after I suffered yet another bloody (and self-inflicted) scalp wound.

Banging my head on shit is my best thing. At least I picked a different target this time (the hitch).

Before we left I got around to dumping the waste-water tanks (that went fine), running the generator (purrs like a kitten) and securing tread covers to the entry steps, Smudge and I spent quality time sitting in front of a battery-operated fan, lovin’ life.

We’ll be back tomorrow. One more red cedar has to come down before power lines can be run. We need gas for the generator. We probably should top-off the fresh-water tank. And I’d really like to get that soft-sided shed finished and bring the Ranger up to the homesite permanently.

Lots to do.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
