MAGA stands for “Make America Great Again.” You know that.
The slogan is identified with (and was trademarked by) Trump, of course, but he wasn’t the first to drop it. Notably, Reagan used it formally in campaigning for the presidency in 1980. A few Democrats — including both Clintons, inexplicably — invoked it regularly, too.
MAGA is straightforward and clear — to quote the late Antonin Scalia, it “says what it says and doesn’t say what it doesn’t say.” It doesn’t mean “Make Trump President Again.” And contrary to what leftist elites would have us believe, it’s not an epithet — MAGA isn’t synonymous with hate or discrimination or regression.
Remember when progressives (led by POTUS #44) tried to redefine “a more perfect Union”? They’re doing the same with MAGA, an intellectually dishonest and morally bankrupt effort to control the language. As the Left didn’t understand “perfect,” they don’t grasp what’s truly “great.”
Perfection is a function of valuing Liberty over all else. Greatness is the result of pursuing exceptionalism. That’s been so since the Founding, yet liberals “reimagine” America as the opposite.
I own a couple of MAGA hats myself, including one emblazoned with ULTRA MAGA. The latter thumbs the eye of the current occupant of the Oval Office and his oft-repeated insult, when just saying “MAGA” isn’t quite enough. (See also “mega-MAGA” and “extreme MAGA Republicans.”)
When I wear those hats, folks will infer that I’m in the tank for Trump. I’m not — neither he nor any other 2024 candidate can count on my vote. It doesn’t signal that I’m a Republican, ’cause I’m not that, either.
If someone sees me flying MAGA as an expression of extremism, however, I’ll definitely take that. Given the current state of country and culture, my commitment to Liberty and American exceptionalism is indeed extreme.
MAGA acknowledges that America has lost its way, is in peril and must be restored. The essence of those four words, abbreviated to four letters, is captured in what private citizen Ronald Reagan said in 1964:
“You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children’s children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done.”
Anything short of that, to the extent of the difference, is un-American. When you call me “MAGA,” you pay me a great compliment.
Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
