Everyone loves sunsets. Us early birds feel the same way about sunrises. When we take in these daily events, invariably we face the glowing orb — west and east, respectively — which misses half the show.
Deb suggested this morning that we move our chairs over to the big hole in the ground, the spot where our house will be. That oriented us toward the west. We watched as golden light behind us crept over the landscape in front of us. It was riveting.
From our usual perch in front of the RV, we’ve done the same thing at the end of the day. The setting sun paints in rosier hues. Each evening, and only for a few minutes, The Amphitheater glows crimson.
It’s mesmerizing. A photo can’t do it justice.
Mornings are special, though. The air is full of waking-up sounds — birds and bugs, mostly, as well as roosters, farm dogs, and this morning a coyote — and go-to-work sounds, like the distant clatter of jake brakes on US 62.
Morning’s where opportunity lives. It’s where the possibilities are.
We tried to get a jump on the heat today, forecast to reach 99°F, by starting the generator at 8am. Our plan, though it’d burn an hour or two more gas, worked to perfection — getting the AC going before the sun hit the east side of the RV kept things much cooler inside.
For some strange reason, before shutting myself indoors I felt the need to start a fire. I started two, actually, in the burn barrel. We had cardboard that simply had to go.
I came out to refuel the Predator at 12:30pm, then ducked back inside. Right about 3pm, two hours before the next pit stop, suddenly the generator quit. I checked the oil, saw no flashing LEDs indicating overload or any sort of fault, and restarted it.
A half-hour later, it quit again.
After weeks of trouble-free operation, I didn’t expect this. Even though we were running it under a canopy next to the fifth-wheel, and with a fan blowing directly on it, I believe it was overheating again. (The heat index was in excess of 110°F.)
This unit is destined to be swapped out under warranty anyway, but what just happened may have changed my timetable. I have until August 12th.
Finally today, we officially put our beloved Ernie up for sale. We posted to a few Facebook pages and there’s a listing on a popular RV buy-sell site.
That’s bittersweet for us, of course.
If you were reading Ubi Libertas Blog two years ago, you understand. This motorhome took us places we only could’ve imagined. He’s central to the joy of our journey.
Despite our love of Life on The Mountain, we’re really gonna miss the big boy.
Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
