We divide our labor, Deb and I. We did it in our Ohio life, we did it on the road and these days, in the odd combination of stationary RVing and building a dream on The Mountain, we’re doing it again. Sure, we undertake some chores together, but for the most part we split for work and reunite for everything else.
It’s efficient. It works. Today was a good example.
For over a year now, Deb has been sketching floor plans in a spiral-bound notebook of graph paper, occasionally presenting them to me for my opinion on this or that. She’s been anxious to lay out her ideas on a different two-dimensional medium — the floor of the cabin, that is.

She began that process this morning with a roll of blue painter’s tape, marking walls and cabinets, fixtures and appliances. She’d stand back, look at what she’d done, then pull up pieces of tape and shuffle things around. It truly is a labor of love, and she’s pouring her whole self into it.
The task I picked today was to create our woodshed (minus the woodshed). We need a place to process, stack and season firewood, and the spot I chose is just off the north end of the driveway. Excavation for the leach field produced a couple of ways to access the area, made better with a layer of gravel.
The wood-storage space, however, needed clearing — it was a tangle of briars, brush, downed limbs and small trees that kept it from being useful. That’s what I addressed today.
I’m proud of the way it turned out, simple as it is. Three pallets that brought us concrete blocks on which our cabin rests now serve to hold cordwood off the ground. I hauled over a couple of large oak rounds, set aside over a year ago for chopping blocks. There’s room for lots of stacked wood, and plenty of space to use a woodchipper or a log-splitter.

Not wanting to waste anything, I saved a dozen large limbs and small trunks from trees I cut today. They’ll be perfect for campfires, once they’re bucked and seasoned.
These days I’m good for about four hours of work like that, especially during hot weather. Fortunately, that’s exactly how long it took me to finish this job.
Deb and I got together at day’s end and shared satisfaction in what each had accomplished.
Like I said, it works for us.
Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
