Does anyone really know what time it is?

It’s Tuesday,” Deb said while reading my blog post last night, “not Monday.”

“Well, shit,” I fumed, quickly launching the WordPress app on my phone and making the change. “See anything else?”

She hesitated for a moment. “I think you left out a word.”

I peered at the passage, and sure enough, it was missing the word “day.” I added it.

Up on The Mountain, I’m lucky if I know what day it is. “When you’re retired, every day’s a Saturday,” the saying goes, but I think it’s more than that. I just don’t know what.

And it’s been a week now since I could tell you what time it is — our playful Heeler broke my watchband and I’ve yet to get it fixed. As someone who’s always used a wristwatch to inform my obsession with intervals, duration and punctuality, that has me working without a net.

(Yeah, I know, I could look at my phone. I’ve never used a phone for that.)

So I’m letting time and the days define themselves, for lack of a better description, instead of them defining me. I suppose that’s not a bad thing.

It is different, though.

This morning’s fog took its sweet time burning off, but eventually gave way to postcard skies, deep blue with cotton-ball clouds. We’re basking in a pleasant stretch of weather — afternoons in the mid-70s, overnights in the low 50s.

Fall, my favorite time of year, is coming.

I wasn’t feeling a lot of zip today. Still, I’m committed to being constructive between sunup and sundown, even if I accomplish only one thing. I considered my options and decided to tackle the disorder in the shed.

There are no photos. It wasn’t that interesting.  But the space now is organized and will work better for me.

This weekend I’ll be adding another galvanized-steel trash can to the shed, expanding critter-resistant indoor storage. For a clue about what’ll go inside, check out yesterday’s header photo.

On the header above the double door were leaned several “No Trespassing” placards, provided to us at no charge by our insurance agent. With deer season right around the corner, it was time to put them out before scouting begins.

And so we did. We added a few strips of purple tape, too.

I’ll leave you with tonight’s sunset on The Mountain, as seen from the cabin and The Amphitheater.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
