Peak sneak

Deb warned me before I left to fetch mail this morning that we had a lot of stuff waiting for pickup. She was right about that — the friendly staff at the Yellville post office brought out today’s haul in a big-ass shopping cart.

Along with several Amazon packages were a couple of thoughtful gifts from family and friends, as well as a brand-new transfer pump. The seller had offered to replace our dead pump under warranty, and I accepted. It took less than a week to get it.

So now we have two transfer pumps. Should the grid go down, it’ll feel good to have a backup.

It’s looking like this week will be the peak for fall foliage in Ozarkansas. I came to that conclusion at the bottom of the driveway this morning, the oaks and locusts sending me a message that the next several days may be the season’s most colorful.

As I drove down off The Mountain I saw more of the same. I took pictures.

By the look of things we’re about a week behind last year. When we returned from The Wedding Trip to Ohio last October we found our little piece of paradise ablaze with color, exactly a year ago today. This autumn is taking longer to unfurl.

Deb and I plan to head south tomorrow toward the Boston Mountains to see what it’s like down there.

Think back to January, when news leaked that the ruling regime was about to severely restrict (and eventually ban) gas stoves and ranges. Deb and I, planning to incorporate just such an appliance into our cabin’s kitchen, found one on sale at Home Depot. We bought it immediately and put it in storage ’til our cabin is ready.

Of course, the administration quickly denied that they intend to ban gas stoves. Soon thereafter, however, left-leaning cities and even entire states began prohibiting installation of gas appliances in new construction. A federal ban is only a matter of time.

That’s how it works — and by that I mean, that’s how it always works. Rumor is followed by denial, which produces complacency that paves the way for restrictions. Light bulbs to ceiling fans to air conditioners to woodstoves and more. Every time.

While working the gun counter at an FFL several years ago, I must’ve sold a hundred or more “AR pistols” equipped with forearm braces. Some consumers, justifiably suspicious that the ATF somehow would crack down on the device, were placated by official “ruling” letters from the agency, assuring Americans that the braces were (and would continue to be) perfectly legal.

And then the political landscape shifted. The political calculus changed. The ATF ambushed gun owners and the firearms industry by ruling pistols fitted with braces to be tightly restricted (and federally registered) SBRs.

The State’s denials and assurances proved meaningless, as usual.

An honest, law-abiding citizen who bought one of those guns from me either had to surrender it, destroy it or register it as an NFA weapon. If they didn’t, they became a felon overnight.

Expect the same kind of regulatory ambush on “assault rifles.” The feds are champing at the bit to join the likes of New York and the People’s Republic of California, and unlike the 1994 ban, this one will be permanent. (There will be no “grandfathering.”) And it has to happen before current events — read: World War III — make an irrefutable case against a ban.

Dismissing this take on our reality as paranoia is ignorant at best, intellectually dishonest at worst. We’ve seen this same script play out far too many times.

Now you, dear readers, have decisions to make. When you get an inkling of looming restrictions, what do you do? Stock up, ’cause you know what’s coming? Or stand back and demean those who do?

Then, if you’ve chosen the former and the State subsequently demands that you account for or surrender your personal property, do you comply? Or, in the name of Liberty, are you willing to become an outlaw?

Your answers to those questions fix your position in these difficult times.

They also determine, incidentally, whether or not this is the right blog for you to be reading.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
