‘We can feel the wind again’

Our views are getting longer.

As I walk the homesite, and when we leave The Mountain and drive the surrounding territory, distant ridges, hidden since spring, are beginning to appear. I can see deeper into the woods.

Autumn colors are softening. Green that remains — and there’s still a lot of that here — is less vibrant. But there’s no denying that leaves have come down.

We can feel the wind again.

We’re about halfway through our cold snap. It was 23°F when I stepped outside this morning (later than usual) and, curious to see if the preparations I made yesterday were performing as intended, I checked the exposed ends of the conductors on the heated hose and the hydrant — warm.

I walked down to the well house. When I pulled open the enclosure, the red glow of the heat lamp greeted me. The thermometer I’d set up in there read 70°F — perfect.

It took us a while to gather ourselves this morning and roll toward the laundromat. But eventually we did, handling that business with customary efficiency.

(Trivia: I fold my shop towels.)

We made a spontaneous stop on our way Home. I’d heard that there’s an archery shop on US 62 in Cotter, and since we were driving right by I thought we oughta check it out.

Small store, but very impressive. Service as well as sales. Friendly, helpful staff.

Both Deb and I remarked (to each other) how strange the whole archery thing feels — the gear is unfamiliar, the language new. And we’re lovin’ the learnin’.

I didn’t buy anything. Deb, however, left with four custom-cut arrows fitted with field points. She doesn’t have a bow — but she’s taken up the slingshot. (Pinch me.) The particular model she’s chosen came with a head that makes it capable of shooting arrows.

Finally today, because it’s Tuesday, we indulged our craving for brisket street tacos at Carolyn’s Razorback Ribs.

It’s to the point that it wouldn’t be Tuesday without brisket street tacos.

And for only the second time since March, we bought gas for under three bucks a gallon.

Life is good.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
