Diggin’ done

Our backhoe guy parked his dump truck and trailer across the road today, like always. Early this afternoon, we watched from the homesite as he loaded up to leave.

Deb made an observation.

“Y’know, that’s the last time we’ll have heavy equipment up here.”

She’s probably right. Though a dump truck or two may deliver loads of gravel at some point, today would be the last of the dirt work. That’s a huge milestone for us — and if you’ve followed our progress the last two years, you understand why it’s a big deal.

I’d already moved 50 concrete blocks, disconnected the Stinky Slinky and stacked cordwood for an hour this morning when the backhoe rolled off the trailer and our guy got to work. The task wasn’t complicated and should’ve been relatively easy — dig a 30-foot trench straight across the driveway — but a couple of stubborn rocks, big ones buried close to the existing sewer line, slowed it way down.

I contributed a digging bar and some sweat of my own, and we muscled the offending rocks out of the way. Three sections of PVC pipe were joined and laid, with a cleanout next to the cabin. Clay and gravel removed earlier was pushed on top of it and the driveway surface restored.

And that was that. We’re done diggin’ up the homesite.

I rebuilt the front stoop, placing the concrete blocks pretty much the way they’d been arranged before. I reconnected the RV’s sewer hose. And I threw a (camo) tarp over the firewood I’d stacked.

This was a very good day.

Tomorrow, I believe I’ll give the Ranger some long-overdue love.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
