And she’s off

All I could think of as Deb was getting ready for work this morning was scrambling to herd a kid out the door on the first day of school. I almost asked her to pose for the obligatory picture next to her Jeep, but I thought better of it.

And then she was gone. That felt weird. Think about it — she and I haven’t spent an entire day apart more than once or twice in the last three years. Before that, we actually worked together.

Maybe you think spending that much time together is unhealthy for a relationship. I say that’s true only if the relationship is sick to begin with.

We’re just fine.

The dogs and I had a quiet day. There were no routine chores pressing. Other than a trip to the post office to pick up two 40-pound bags of dog food (our preferred brand, not available locally), I did nothing of effort or effect. That felt pretty good.

Since yesterday, winds have become more insistent here, coming out of the west for the most part. It looks like breezy conditions will continue throughout the week. Put that together with seasonal chill and it’s hard to deny that we’re turning the corner into winter.

The year’s shortest days are just two weeks away.

I seem to be acclimating to the cold (such as it is in Ozarkansas) fairly well this year. Oh, it most definitely will get bitter at some point (or points) and make me prove how tough I am, but our indoor-outdoor existence gives me a chance to work up to the challenge.

This is nothing like straight-up RVing in the winter. Turns out it’s exactly like homesteading while living in an RV.

Deb got Home shortly after 5pm. We talked about her first day at the bank, which she said went well. Watching human-resources and corporate-culture training videos, reading study guides and taking quizzes consumed the bulk of it.

As she writes her part of this new chapter, I’ll be finding my feet here on The Mountain. It’ll be different, though I can’t yet predict how.

I suspect it’ll be good for my pace.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
