It’s the simple things.
Like hauling two bags of trash to the transfer station this morning, congratulating myself that it had been nine days, two burns and one bucket in the compost tumbler since the last trip.

Turning onto the subdivision road and noticing that the left-hand side showed signs of having been worked, then pulling up behind a Marion County grader as it smoothed out the rough places.
Pulling away from the transfer station and taking in the sweeping view to the south, a reminder that there’s beauty even at the county dump.

Snapping a photo of stickers on a car in the parking lot at Harps, then turning to walk away and bumping into its owner, an elderly man on a scooter, lifelong resident, Trump 2024 hat.
Leaving the store afterward to find two old women leaning on my truck and having a lively conversation, taking to heart their advice that “there’s nothin’ the matter with long hair on a man, long as he keeps it clean.”
Emptying 110 gallons of sanitized water from our freeze-prone barrels and being done in 20 minutes.

Drawing a deep breath, acknowledging that all of our winterizing is done.
Taking a walk in the woods with Miss Smudge, watching her alert on a deer that she saw before I did.
Spotting a single tuft of down snagged on a bare twig, fluttering in the breeze.
Enjoying today’s sunset reflected in the windows of our cabin.
Knowing that Deb gets a four-day weekend.
Seeing that the 14-day weather forecast shows highs in the 50s and 60s, lows in the 30s and 40s, light winds and possibly three days of rain.
Life is good.
Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
