Layers revealed

We’ve all been conditioned to be displeased with mornings like the one that dawned over The Mountain today. Rain and fog aren’t on anyone’s wish list. Cold and damp keep folks indoors. And if we do have to be about, we keep our heads down ’til the sun comes out.

Maybe I’m different, but I can’t see being picky about the weather on a day that I wasn’t promised to begin with.

Not knowing if the county transfer station would be closing early on this, the last business day before Christmas, I wanted to get there by 10am. I gathered trash from the RV, the cabin and the shed, putting together enough for two respectable bags and tossing them into the bed of the truck.

I looked up from my work, out over the valley, and was rewarded for having kept my eyes open on a gloomy morning.

Mists rose from folds and creases in the mountains, draping the ridges like garland. The landscape had layers, depth and textures not visible on those “pretty” days.

I absolutely love mornings like this.

Our round of Friday errands carried us deeper into the misty scene. We dropped off trash, bought a 20-pound LP tank for the new grill (and 20 pounds of LP) at Miller Hardware, fetched mail, picked up groceries at Harps and topped off the Silverado’s tank at Casey’s in Flippin.

As day’s end approached, we drove down to Deb’s cousin’s cabin for some overdue porch-sittin’.

Today’s mail brought something that might surprise you. It’s an addition to our med kits, which already included antibiotics (in a Jase Medical “Jase Case”), potassium iodide, ivermectin and others. We obtained this product at no charge through a statewide nonprofit, simply by asking for it.

It’s naloxone hydrochloride (Narcan injectable), the opioid antagonist that temporarily reverses the effects of an overdose. We also received a handful of fentanyl test trips.

Obviously (or at least I hope it’s obvious), neither Deb nor I uses opioids of any kind. But to be perfectly candid with you, we didn’t ask for this stuff so that we can play Good Samaritan to someone else.

It’s for us.

Whether we might come into contact with fentanyl inadvertently or through malicious intent, we wanted to have naloxone on-hand.

Betcha didn’t expect to read that here, huh?

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
