Once again, the threat of unpleasant weather has elbowed its way in front of whatever else we might want to think about. This time, it comes in a form that Ozarkansans dread — freezing rain. An ice storm can (and usually does) pull down trees and power lines, spawning outages and generally making a mess of things.
And that’s what we’re lookin’ at here, 12 hours of freezing rain. It’ll start, they say, shortly after midnight tonight and keep falling past noon tomorrow. The accumulations being predicted would be enough to cause some trouble.
As for us, there’s not a whole lot more we can do to prepare. Within the last few days I’ve run our generators. Our chain saws are in good shape. The gas tanks in the Jeep and the pickup are close to full. If we lose grid power, we lose water — the pump in our deep well is 220VAC, so the generators are of no help — and we’d need to find an alternative source.
But we have food and we have drinking water, and we have enough fuel to keep us going awhile. I’d prefer to have a little more gasoline on-hand and a little more LP, but we’ll be fine.
Deb will stay in touch with her boss to see if the bank is closed tomorrow.
From a prepping perspective, an ice storm is a generic event. In terms of effect, it’s a simple power outage.
The unknowns are scope and duration. We won’t have those answers ’til afterward.
Laundromat day. Totally unremarkable.
At least we handled that business quickly and were Home from Gassville by 1pm.
I could’ve written something more readable for you today, weaving a story about this or that. But really, some days don’t deserve the fluffing.
I’m pretty sure tomorrow will be more interesting. See you then.
Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
