In brief

And I knew all of my life
That someday it would end
Get up and go outside
Don’t let the old man in

Toby Keith, July 8th, 1961 – February 5th, 2024

Every morning I walk Deb out to her Jeep as she heads off to a day of work. After watching her roll down the driveway today, I sauntered toward the shed and looked out across the valley. The rising sun had just kissed one of Hall Mountain’s western summits, the first place in our field of view to see the sun each morning.

Coincidentally, at that moment I was also looking over the spot where I planned to work today. The north side of that stretch of the driveway needed a bit of cleanup, and the corners at the road were pretty ratty — they’d been used during excavation last year as a dumping ground for all manner of debris. I did routine chores and tied up a few loose ends from yesterday’s work on the lower level, then dove into today’s project.

It was, to say it plainly, more of the same kind of brush-pilin’ and rock-slingin’ that’s occupied me of late. When it was done — which altogether took about four hours — I judged it good. It transformed the space just the way I’d hoped it would.

Only two people live down past us on the road and drive by this spot regularly. Add UPS and FedEx, plus the rare visitor, and still it’s fair to say that if I didn’t have a blog, no one would see what I did today. I labored for us, just Deb and me, out of a sense of pride.

I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
