Wherever we are, Deb and I always fly the American flag. It waved from the front porch at Second Chance Ranch. We raised it above the roof of the motorhome, everywhere we parked for the night. Even before we took up residence on The Mountain, we’d planted a small Stars’n’Stripes up by The Amphitheater.
We’re American Patriots. It’s what we do.
But we had much bigger plans for our Ozarkansas Home, though, and we brought them to life this morning. More than just an American flag, we added two others — the state flag of Arkansas, and the Gadsden flag.
I can’t easily describe how such a seemingly small act had a big impact on us, but it did. We’re not putting on a show for anyone — like most of what we do with our land up here, almost no one will ever see those flags. No, this we did for us, a fundamental expression of who we are.
And because we make our Home in Free America, no one will try to dictate to us what flags we fly from The Mountain.
Now, two flags fly above my land that really sum up how I feel.
Aaron Lewis, “Country Boy”
One is the colors that fly high and proud — the red, the white, the blue.
The other one’s got a rattlesnake, with a simple statement made.
“Don’t Tread On Me” is what is says, and I’ll take that to my grave.
While I was in the mood to drill pilot holes, drive wood screws and mount brackets to the outside of the cabin, we also put up a pair of solar lanterns, one by each door. They’re attractive ornaments during the day and produce just the right amount of light after dark.
This afternoon, Deb and I took a walk. We saw signs of spring. Later, she drove Mercy to Flippin for a bath and picked up groceries at Walmart.
A very good Sunday.
Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
