After Deb gets Home tomorrow afternoon, we’ll be staying put for the next 86 hours. Neither of us intends to venture off The Mountain again until she leaves for work on Tuesday morning (except in case of emergency, of course).
That, as I’ve been saying for some weeks now, is the way we’ve planned it. Our slice of Ozarkansas is in the path of totality for Monday’s total solar eclipse, and we have no interest in mixing it up with whatever influx of visitors descends on the region.
It may be a big deal. Or it may be nothing. Either way, we won’t be out in the midst of it.
Today was Deb’s day off this week, perfect timing for wrapping things up before we hunker down. A stop at the Yellville post office, then on to Gassville to do a short load of laundry. On the way to the vape shop in Mountain Home to stock up on juice, we visited a small gun shop close by — Bob’s Guns & Sporting Goods.
The place has been in business for 52 years. It’s a cool combination of great selection and old-school service, warm and helpful. Both Deb and I enjoyed the hour we spent there. We’ll be going back soon.
Since it was lunchtime by then, we took our midday meal at Holy Smokes BBQ. We began with glasses of sweet tea and cups of “Arkansas state champion chili.” Then Deb had “3 Pigs on a Fly” (bacon, ham and pulled pork on a ciabatta, with lettuce, tomato, red onion, mayo and cheese), while I chose the “Daddy Mac Flat Wrap” (shredded cheddar, jalapeño sausage, brisket, smoked mac’n’cheese, sweet glaze and dope cheese).

As usual, the food was spectacular.
Back in Marion County later, we did a fill-in-the-gaps curbside pickup run at Walmart and topped off the Silverado’s tank at Murphy USA ($3.159).
We’re ready to settle-in ’til Tuesday.
The whole time we were out, we couldn’t help noticing that traffic was heavier than usual. We spotted a lot more out-of-state plates than we’re used to seeing this time of year. Gas stations were jammed, presumably locals trying to beat a potential weekend rush.
We just smiled.
As I’ve said, we have no idea how this’ll all play out. If we’re lucky, we won’t find out ’til it’s over.
In closing, a word for the eye-rollers out there, those of you who think all of this is, for lack of a better characterization, a bit much.
We neither seek your understanding nor do we require your approval.
It’s clear that you have nothing to learn from us. Make your judgements about what we’re doing, if that makes you feel better about yourself, and then do what you want. Do things differently. Do nothing.
I want you to know — and I mean this with all the sincerity I can muster — that we don’t give a flying fuck what you think.
Bless your heart.
Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
