Dig this

Deb and I started today in the cabin, re-thinking the layout of the north end of the living space. Ultimately we decided to move the woodstove from the corner to near the middle of the north wall. We laid out the new hearth in blue masking tape and took measurements.

Then it was off to the big city — Mountain Home, that is — to do some purposeful shopping.

This day will be remembered for dramatic and ominous skies, harbingers of turbulent weather coming later in the day.

By the time we successfully assaulted Lowe’s and Harbor Freight (it’s a free-bucket weekend), we’d worked up an appetite. In the parking lot of the strip mall are several portable buildings that have been turned into drive-up eateries. We chose Mountain Home Burger Company, feasting on signature smash burgers and fat, crispy, salty fries at their one and only picnic table.

This was decidedly not fast food. Absolutely sensational fare.

Well-fed, we headed back west. Before grabbing curbside pickup at Walmart, I filled the Silverado’s tank at Casey’s in Flippin — a few months of buying snacks at the Gassville store had earned me 41 cents off every gallon I put in.

Unloading the truck back on The Mountain was something of a fire drill. We did get everything inside, safe and dry, before the storms hit.

“Everything” included all the pieces and parts we’ll need to install a chimney on the north end of the cabin. What you see pictured here cost us as much as we paid for the stove itself. To be fair, though, the stove was a Facebook Marketplace find and we got a screamin’ deal on it.

Still to be done — hearth, wall, and interior (single-wall) stove pipe.

One more thing. After two straight blog posts about knives, I’m giving you a break — sort of. Truth is, I bought a knife today. It cost me all of 30 bucks.

I’m over the moon here, but I’m not gonna tell you what it is. Not yet.

Maybe tomorrow. Maybe not ’til Monday. We’ll see.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
