After all that

With our eyes on weather radar last night, we took the dogs out just before big, bad storms looked like they’d slam into The Mountain. Deb called my attention to the sky to our north and west, which was where the heavy weather would come from.

It was ominous and yet beautiful. We ducked back into the camper and awaited the inevitable.

Thunder rumbled all around us. Soon raindrops began pattering on the roof. Every now and then, a gust of wind would puff on the west side of the trailer.

We waited for The Big Blow. It never came.

Two hours later, it was past us.

We got only a quarter-inch of rain. The wind had been strong enough (at times) to scrape a few leaves from nearby oaks. But overall, it was a big fat nothin’.

And I know exactly why we were so lucky — because I saved that eastern fence lizard yesterday.

I’m convinced of that. Don’t bother trying to talk me out of it.

It was the third straight day that severe weather hammered the central US and the second time this week that we’d been under the gun. Friends in other states weren’t so fortunate, some dealing with hail, tornadoes and flooding.

The National Weather Service failed to issue warnings for some of yesterday’s most devastating tornadoes, by the way. Local sirens depend on that and didn’t sound. And the system that sends alerts to NOAA weather radios has been something less than 100% reliable the last several weeks.

There’s a lesson in there, I think, about complacency born of total reliance on government to take care of us. Don’t fall into that trap.

This time we came out without a scratch. Our turn will come sooner or later. For now, though, I’m gonna take care of The Mountain’s lizards.

“People don’t understand how sick the mind of the liberal white woman is, and they don’t understand that that is the true beating heart of the Democrat party today.”

“Something like 77% of single women vote Democrat, and the majority, over 58% of those women, have been diagnosed with mental illness. Single, miserable women who are clinically insane are the beating heart of the Democrat party.”

Jesse Kelly, conservative commentator, to Tucker Carlson

It’s beyond credible dispute that I’m frugal. (Okay, I’m cheap.) To go along with my can-do mindset is a make-do attitude — I absolutely hate discarding imperfect things, slightly broken things, things that I can adapt to rather than replace.

My 15-year-old Dell notebook computer, the one on which I produce Ubi Libertas Blog, is one of those things. It’s woefully short in the RAM department, and I struggle every day with it. Deb surprised me with a new computer last year, a screamin’ Black Friday deal, and I made her return it and get her money back.

The ol’ horse needs a new battery, too. It’s needed a new battery for ten years. Finally, this week, I broke down and bought one — less than $20, which is a tiny fraction of what they used to cost.

I hated doing even that, but it’s done. I installed it today. We’ll see if it makes any difference.

We brought Dipstick back Home today.

Our sweet little buddy, that badass ball of wiry fur, the coolest dog we’ve ever loved, is with us again on The Mountain. Sadness remains, but we — all of us — find peace in being together again.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
