Both Deb and I remarked about how quiet it was here early this morning. Unlike yesterday, it wasn’t at all birdy. Even the squirrels were somewhere else.
I guess it could’ve been the cloud cover, gray and low. Precipitation wasn’t in the forecast, but at that hour it sure looked like it might rain. Maybe the critters were reacting to that.
Deb said that three whitetail does crossed the road in front of her about a mile from here. Later in her commute, almost to the state highway, she had to brake for a pair of roadrunners.
I snapped a few photos and asked my Seek app to identify the subjects. One was a giant walkingstick (Megaphasma denticrus), which I knew. Another became “Volunteer of the Day” (below).
An app like Seek doesn’t like to identify a thing without full confidence. That can be frustrating, but sometimes it simply takes patience, returning to a plant after it’s produced flowers or fruit.
We interrupt the national and cultural disgrace known as “pride month” to wish you a Happy Flag Day.
Volunteer of the Day: Caroline Horsenettle (Solanum carolinense), aka “devil’s tomato.” Native. Not a true nettle, but rather a nightshade with spines.
While Deb and I were beginning our day drinking coffee and listening to Scout and Smudge crunch their kibble, she suggested that we end it drinking beer at Crooked Creek Pub. I saluted that immediately.
I’ll end this post here, then. We’ll catch up tomorrow.
Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
