Well done

Yes, we did make it out to Crooked Creek Pub for dinner yesterday. Deb had the Pub Burger (pictured, below) and once again I went with the Southern Cubano (today’s header image). We enjoyed lively conversation with our hosts, as well as a couple of neighbors who live near us on the high ground.

Live music, too. It was a good place to be and a good time to be there.

We awoke well-rested this morning. The day promised to be a genuine scorcher, the season’s initial stretch of truly oppressive heat, so our first order of business was to knock out regular chores — gather trash and recyclables, re-fill dog-food canisters, and dump waste-water tanks. Once we’d finished, we gauged our readiness for a small project in the cabin.

The heat was starting to build in the uninsulated space as I opened a large box and pulled out the mounting hardware for our new air conditioner. We plugged in a fan to get the air moving, which helped a little. Both of us chugged water and Gatorade over the next few hours, too, but it came down to a race between us and heat exhaustion.

On the one hand, we won — the AC is in and operating, though today it couldn’t overcome 100°F temperatures inside the cabin. On the other, our aging bodies took a serious hit. The heat really cooked us, all the way through.

We spent the afternoon and evening in the camper, recovering. We’re smart that way.

This little guy (pretty big for a toad, actually) supervised our work today.

It appears to be a Woodhouse’s toad (Anaxyrus woodhousii), by the way. Not too common ’round here.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
