Rain, Beryl?

Crooked Creek is dry as a bone at the Flippin bridge these days. It’s been that way for weeks. We likely won’t see an actual creek in that bed again ’til November or so — we’re in a drought, sure, but this is all part of the cycle of things here.

Crooked Creek at Flippin, looking downstream from the bridge this morning…
…and looking upstream this afternoon.

When the Ozarkansas landscape gets typically dry and dusty, locals look for any sign of relief. We might get some this week, too, as a system by the name of Beryl is predicted to come our way.

Once a record-setting Category 5 hurricane and currently a tropical storm, early tomorrow morning Beryl will move onshore in Texas (probably as a hurricane). It’s then expected to make a hard right turn, and that northeasterly track may well bring buckets of rain to the state of Arkansas.

Nothing is guaranteed, but right now The Mountain is solidly inside the system’s projected path. We’re at “marginal” risk for winds up to 60mph and hail the size of golf balls. The potential for tornadoes, though not zero, is said to be low.

What we’re hangin’ our hats on is the prediction of three to four inches of rain. That wouldn’t bring Crooked Creek back up to its banks (at least not for long), but anything close to forecast amounts will be welcomed.

We expect Beryl’s rain to begin here tomorrow night and stay with us throughout Tuesday. Our fingers are firmly crossed.

Sunday. Laundry. Groceries.

At the laundromat we ran into a guy we’d met there a few weeks ago, the one who was wearing a Ruby Ridge t-shirt. Rough-lookin’ and redneck, but affable.

Today, as soon as he saw us, he whipped out his phone and began showing us pictures.

Of his garden.

It’s not always easy coaxing vegetables from the Ozarkansas ground, but this fella’s havin’ a good year. He’s proud of that, as he should be, and he wanted to share that pride with us.

Sometimes the connections we make, even the casual ones, show up in ways we don’t expect. This was one of those times.

Life is good.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
