Sat’n’Sun: The Rundown

No, yesterday wasn’t the beginning of another hiatus. Deb and I got started early, worked all day in the cabin, and were pooped when we finished. I didn’t have the juice to produce a blog post, and really, despite hours of serious effort on our part, there wasn’t much to tell.

Deb committed to installing all 40 of our attic baffles, and she wouldn’t stop ’til she was done. These molded polystyrene sheets are designed to direct warm air from the soffit vents toward the ridgeline, which will make the structure easier to cool (and, oddly enough, easier to heat).

We won’t see the full effect ’til the ceiling is in and the cabin is insulated, of course.

The job I took on was installing the chimney thimble in the north wall. That involved cutting a one-foot hole in the siding — yeah, that was scary — then mounting the exterior half of the pass-through and sealing it with fireproof caulk.

Because I totally suck at this sort of thing, it took longer than it should’ve and isn’t as perfect as I’d like, but it’ll do the job. Now I can move on with the rest of the woodstove setup.

Today was our customary laundry-and-provisions day. I’ll share just a couple of things worth mentioning.

Crooked Creek, ten days after we saw record-setting rainfall, is back down again — as in way down, now more closely resembling its usual summertime condition.

We finished at the laundromat an hour or so early. Instead of running back Home to The Mountain only to run out again for curbside pickup, we took a 25-mile (round-trip) drive down to Buffalo City on the White River. From the roads to the scenery to the destination, it was the perfect diversion.

At the public-access area, we could see that the water had come up a good six feet higher than it was today. In the photo above, it may look like The Mighty White still is muddy near the banks, but zoom in and look again — that’s only the gravel bottom. The water is crystal-clear.

So a weekend that began productively ended in relaxing fashion. Works for us.

A handful of readers, I suspect, might be wondering if I have anything to say about the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics.

Indeed I do.

I won’t be saying it today, though — it’d be too much work for the way I feel right now. (Contented, that is.) Maybe tomorrow.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
