Still scorching

There’s not much to say today. A heat index that reached 115°F this afternoon singed any enthusiasm I might’ve had for doing something consequential. The dogs and I hunkered down with two ACs and two fans running full-tilt. The chillers struggled to keep up.

August arrived like a four-alarm blaze.

The only other thing I’ll share today is a little more detail about the Swiss Army knife I’ve begun resurrecting. It’s a Victorinox Fieldmaster, in my opinion the best of the familiar red-handled SAKs — just the right complement of tools.

Notably, it features a Phillips screwdriver in place of the corkscrew. No self-respecting American needs a corkscrew.

I’ve succeeded in getting rid of almost all of the corrosion, with the exception of one tiny spot on the can opener. Oiling the pivots and backsprings generously with Benchmade BlueLube flushed away gum and grit.

I put a fresh edge on the cutting blades using only a ceramic rod (aka, a “crock stick”), bringing them to shaving-sharp with a few stropping strokes on the flesh side of an old belt.

Finally, I removed the toothpick and tweezers and popped off the original Celidor scales. After wiping the now-naked knife down with isopropyl alcohol, I put everything into a small Ziploc bag and set it aside.

That’s where it’ll stay ’til this weekend or early next week. When you see this Fieldmaster here again, it’ll look very different.

Anyway, that’s the plan.
