On your mark…

Days like this, it’s a race. I come out of the blocks as early as I’m able, execute my routine, then see what else needs to be done and can be done before conditions make it unwise to continue. Efficiency is the key.

I focus on relatively small stuff, tasks I can complete. It makes no sense to dive into a big project that rising temperatures are sure to interrupt.

Deb was still getting ready for work when I finished this morning’s chores. I walked down to the shed, grabbed a shovel and a garden rake, and spread the remaining gravel over a patch of bare clay, right where the Silverado’s front tires rest when it’s parked.

I had just enough to fill-in a low spot and cover the soft clay. (Storms brought a half-inch of rain overnight.) Now, for the first time since we moved to The Mountain, the nose of my truck won’t sit in a muddy hole.

I shot silicone on the moving parts of the camper’s awning mechanism and WD-40 on the door latch. Then it was time to dump tanks, black water followed by gray. I broke out the WD-40 again and doused the valve rods, which had gotten sticky.

I sat for a bit and watched birds at the feeders.

The plan for tomorrow is to lay brick for the hearth. We’d originally intended to put it down in a conventional “brick wall” pattern, but last weekend Deb showed me picture of a different layout she prefers.

So this morning I got up from my birdwatching chair, went into the cabin and placed a couple of runs to see how that affects what we’ll do. I think it’ll work. It might even be easier.

If anything, I may have cut those seven bricks last Saturday for nothing. Looks like we won’t need to use the halfies.

By my calculations, we have eight unmolested bricks to spare. If we were to set the ones I cut — and there’s a sneaky way to do that — our overage jumps to 14.

We’ll just see how it goes.

It was about 10:30am today when I waved the white flag and retreated into the camper. I felt like I’d won this day’s race, though, and accomplished a few things.

I want to point out a couple of items in the news today. Just two.

The first is that Chuckles reportedly delivered a speech outlining her prescription for the crippled US economy. I say “reportedly” because I didn’t watch it. I haven’t read it. What I’ve noticed, though, is the reactions to her proposals.

Let’s be honest — the woman has all the gravitas of a Playskool catalog. Democrats and other anti-American progressives have been willing to overlook that. But her economic plan, which nukes the free market in favor of federal oversight of private companies’ books and balance sheets, was not well received by the Left.

Unspoken is the fact that progressives don’t object to it on principle. They simply know that it’s campaign poison. It makes her an even easier target for Trump-Vance.

The over-under for how fast she abandons her commie position is a week. I’ll take the under.

Now, the other news story has to do with Trump’s legal problems. He was, as you know, convicted in a New York court on 34 felony counts. The verdict was rendered at the end of May.

Any intellectually honest analysis recognizes that the prosecution was a political hit-job, the judge is a Democrat tool, the charges were manufactured, and the jury deliberations were corrupted by instructions that violate the Constitution. But here we are.

Sentencing is scheduled for September 18th. Two days before that, the judge is set to rule on Trump’s motion to dismiss, which is based on the presidential immunity decision handed down by the Supreme Court on July 1st.

If the judge ignores SCOTUS and denies the motion, Trump may well be incarcerated on the 18th. NYC’s mayor says that Rikers Island is all ready to receive him.

The abomination known as “early voting” begins on September 16th. Election Day is November 5th.

As I listen to pundits speculate about public reaction should Trump go to jail, there’s a common theme — the Right will do nothing. No protests. No marches.

No civil war. That’s just talk.

I can’t argue with that assessment.

The Right doesn’t know how to fight dirty and win ugly. Conservatives are squeamish, far too preoccupied with appearing respectable to engage in the kind of raw extremism that’d make The Founders proud.

There’s already been an assassination attempt on Trump, and another plot was foiled. He’s been convicted on charges that aren’t even crimes. And now there’s a good chance he’ll be imprisoned.

What will the Right do? All those “Patriots”? The “civil war” types?

Nothing.

The enemies of Liberty pay no institutional, political or personal price. They’ve shredded the Constitution and wrecked the country — and will continue to do so — because there are no consequences.

That’s on us.

That must change.

No, not with some clusterfucking spasm like January 6th. But “lovers of freedom,” as Coolidge said of those who fought and died for our independence, must indeed be “anxious for the fray.”

Today’s Patriots must find their ferocity, collect the toll, and never relent.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
