Shine on

Snow time ain’t no time to stay outdoors and spoon,
So shine on, shine on Harvest Moon, for me and my gal.

Deb called my attention to it this morning as she traveled the county road — last night’s Harvest Moon still hung over Ozarkansas in the western sky, flirting with a few clouds as it eased toward the horizon.

I stood in the driveway and watched it slowly sink, snapping a few photos to preserve the moment.

Today would be a burn-barrel day. A recent Home Depot purchase came in an enormous cardboard box, and together with what all else we’d collected, I had just enough to stuff our homemade incinerator to the brim.

I decided this morning that I wanted to dedicate one folding knife solely to combustibles duty, something I could leave in the Ranger and not miss it. The natural choice was the knife I used when I ran Deb’s wholesale warehouse in Columbus — a Kershaw 1820, aka the “Needs Work.”

I’ve never liked the look of a wharncliffe blade. (I could say the same about the tanto pattern, but I’ll save that rant for another day.) I understand its utility and all, but it just offends my eyes. This Kershaw is the only wharny I own, and as long as I don’t look at it, I love it. The thing dispatches cardboard like nothing else I’ve ever used.

A few particulars — that fugly blade is three inches long, made of Sandvik 14C28N stainless. It deploys using Kershaw’s “SpeedSafe” assisted-opening mechanism and features a liner lock. The fat black handle slabs are fiberglass-reinforced nylon.

Made-in-USA. The Needs Work has been discontinued, but when it was still on the market the street price was around $35.

It worked as well today as it did the last time I used it, which was over four years ago. Definitely the right tool for the job.

We’re targeting Saturday for framing the bath-laundry walls in the cabin. Two of the three, anyway, the ones that’ll need to be up to run plumbing and virtually all of the electric. I believe we have everything we need to do the job.

Until then, I do what I get done. Life is good.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
