I caught the early show

The eastern sky at sunup, which Deb has the good fortune to see five days a week, put on a show for me this morning. It brightened over the treetops above the cabin in a mesmerizing display of dramatic clouds and vivid hues.

That, my friends, is the sort of thing worth waking up for. It’s good to be a morning person.

After my first round of chores, and on a whim, I did something I’ve been meaning to do for a while now — try a couple of the items included in the Nutrient Survival sample packs we bought. That’d also give me a chance to fire-up a cheap backpacking stove I got on one of those irresistible “lightning deals” and test a titanium kettle for the first time.

The stove lit easily and brought a cup of water to a boil in about 90 seconds. I dumped the contents of the “Homestyle Scramble” packet into a separate pot, added water to cover, stirred it and put the lid on. While waiting for the food to rehydrate, I boiled a little more water and made a mug of instant “Vitamin Coffee (Classic Roast).”

The Homestyle Scramble — eggs, potatoes, bell peppers, and sharp cheddar cheese — was tasty and satisfying, though not spicy enough for my palate. (That’s typical of dehydrated meals, no matter who makes them.) I overdid it on the water, too, and the result was more stew than scramble. (The packet didn’t include instructions.)

The Vitamin Coffee was, in a word, awful. I like bitter coffee, actually, but this was just sour. Now maybe that’s because it’s instant and I’ve been spoiled by brewed. In any case, I didn’t want a second cup.

Overall, Nutrient Survival stuff tends to be expensive. I believe it’s possible to do as well (or better) for half the cost by looking for deals. Strictly in terms of quality and flavor, however, I’d eat the Nutrient Survival Homestyle Scramble again.

The Vitamin Coffee, not so much.

Aside from food and drink, I like the kettle and I like the stove. Both are worth including in our outdoors gear.

I believe I’ll put a wrap on the blog early today. I have more to do, but nothing I feel like chronicling. And tomorrow’s a big day, at least to us.

We’ll catch up soon.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
