When Deb and I dined at Carolyn’s Razorback Ribs yesterday afternoon, we ordered our regular burgers. She had a cheeseburger with “special secret sauce” and sidewinder fries, and I went with “Fire in the Hole” — but in place of the usual slaw, for my side I chose “BBQ Baked Beans.”
I don’t know why, especially.
Good as my burger was, that side (pictured here again today) made the meal. The beans were tender without being mushy, the sauce tangy and sweet. But almost half of the bowl was big chunks of house-smoked brisket and pulled pork.
Quite possibly the best bowl of baked beans I’ve ever had.
Now I need to find a restaurant over this way that serves a righteous bowl of southern white beans. I may have to make a pot myself — it’s great cold-weather comfort food.
A friend up near Springfield, Missouri told us that she got over three inches of rain yesterday. Less than 40 miles northeast of here, high winds flipped a fifth-wheel camper and took the life of a man sheltering inside.
On this side of the state line, we saw storms and a respectable amount of rain, though no flooding and no wind to speak of. None of this had been forecast — it was all pop-up stuff.
Anyway, we’re pretty well watered on The Mountain today.
I’m still hurtin’ from Saturday’s labor, to be frank about it. I felt no need to press today — at anything — and so I didn’t.
I took my sweet time tidying up the cabin. I put all the tools away first, then cleaned up leftover building materials and saved any scrap that might be useful later (even if only for kindling). I vacuumed up sawdust and other debris.
Finally, I stowed stuff where it’ll be easy to get to..
Oh, I hung a string of lights. Between the tinted windows and the gray skies, it was pretty dark in there this morning.

I bought a 5/32″ drill bit at Home Depot yesterday, to replace one I’d snapped while putting up the heatshields. I also picked up this tape measure (pictured) — a 35-foot Milwaukee-branded “Wide Blade,” both highly recommended and collecting mixed reviews. I decided it’d serve me better than the cheap tapes I’ve been using.

The wide blade is designed to allow longer reach before the tape “breaks.” That’ll be helpful when I’m working alone.

I like the finger stop. The numbers are big and legible, and they’re on both sides of the tape. Nifty.
If this tape measure holds up, I believe it’ll save me time and steps. We’ll see.
Deb and I got a snort out of a graphic used in Milwaukee’s marketing of its “Wide Blade” tapes. I’ve included it here, for your amusement.

So if you wondered if DIY tools target one sex over the other, this illustration should remove all doubt.
Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
