Ozarkansas Sky: Wonder in Three Acts

“I need sleeves,” Deb explained when she got home from work yesterday. She’d asked that we head over to our storage unit in Gassville so that she could fetch clothes better suited to the season. Mornings have been cool lately, and we may get our first frost Tuesday night.

It’s time to rotate her wardrobe.

We picked up drive-thru food on our way Home and rolled west into a blazing sun, stopping to eat at the White River overlook.

I. Sundown

Northern Lights, aka aurora borealis, paid a visit to The Mountain back in May, and again in July. That’s unusual in The South, of course.

We didn’t get the kind of show that’s common at northern latitudes, but soft colors glowing in the northern sky were an intriguing departure from the norm.

Last night, the Lights returned. This time was different — instead of blurry pastel clouds, we got columns and shafts of light that moved. Colors were more vivid, and the breathtaking phenomenon was visible to the naked eye.

II. Aurora

Deb loves her morning commute. More often than not, she sees more deer in the woods and fields than she passes other vehicles on the road.

Much of the year, she travels during “the golden hour” — that time of day when the dawning sun is at its lowest angle and casts its warmest light. The morning sky was especially golden today.

She remarked that the scene through which she passed was “surreal,” the colors rich and edges almost unbelievably sharp.

III. Daybreak

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
