Never. Gets. Old.

Our Monday, and thus our week, didn’t begin in the usual way. An acute dental issue greeted Deb this morning, keeping her out of work and requiring immediate attention.

Fun fact: Virtually every dentist in Ozarkansas takes two weeks off around Christmas and New Year’s. It took Deb hours to find someone who’d see her today.

I was reminded of my own experience one Christmas Day, probably 30 years ago now, when a periodontal problem sent me running to the ER. (My dentist, too, had closed his office for the holidays.) What I remember most is the genuine goodness of the hospital staff that day — every one a Jew, an atheist, an agnostic, or a non-believer of some description. They acted without agenda or motive, beyond the care they were charged with providing.

As I left, each wished me a “Merry Christmas.” I was struck by the sincerity of the benediction, despite it not being grounded in religious faith.

Anyway, late this afternoon I’ll drive Deb down to Marshall to receive the care she needs. And we’ll be coming back after dark, which neither of us is looking forward to.

There’s a narrow window of time on clear mornings when a rising sun paints the landscape to our south and west in soft, warm light. The show changes with the seasons. Often we’re treated to wispy clouds in the valleys’ folds.

I’m transfixed by the sight — always.

I never tire of this.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
