Not only did I keep my distance from the visitors yesterday, I didn’t watch them do what they did. It’d be fair to say that I ignored them.
Twice, however, inadvertently, I caught a glimpse of my ex-wife-to-be, both times from behind her, both times from afar. I saw that she was wearing what appeared to be some sort of appliance on her upper body.
I didn’t care enough in the moment to stare or wonder why. I found it odd and thought no more about it.
It wasn’t until four hours after she left that it hit me. I entered my suspicion into the Amazon search box and sure enough, this image matched what I saw:
That, my friends, is a chest rig for a GoPro or similar camera. As she said herself in a Facebook post later,
“I recorded every second I was on the property.”
It’s not my objective to draw conclusions about motive or state of mind — I’ll leave that to others, and many already have weighed in. But let this be a cautionary tale to anyone, man or woman, who’s in my situation. Be careful.
My conduct yesterday wasn’t determined by the presence of a peace officer. It would’ve been no different had I been aware that I was being recorded.
I can attest that it’s not always easy to exercise self-control under difficult circumstances. But even a single ill-advised word or an angry outburst can complicate matters, often irreparably.
So keep yourself in check. More important, stow your trust. You don’t know who you’re dealing with.
Today on The Mountain, it’s all about the weather. That’ll be the case for the next five days, in fact, with the prospect of severe storms and heavy rain in the forecast.
Obviously, I didn’t have a chance to exercise the generators yesterday. Maintenance will have to carry the day.
The dogs have bounced back from recent events. So have I. Life goes on — or, rather, it resumes.
And what does that life look like this morning?
Sunshine. Blue sky. Whispering breeze. Songbirds. T-shirt temps. The green of spring dusting the ridges.
Hot coffee in a stoneware mug. The love and loyalty of good dogs.
Hall Mountain looms like a Great Spirit, my guardian, a silent sentinel that never sleeps.
Sweet, sweet peace and quiet.
There’s no place on Earth I want to be, and no better time to be here.
Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
