The Mountain has a social-media presence of its own, separate from my personal profiles. I share links to these posts on that page.
Mid-afternoon yesterday, I discovered an inappropriate comment from an individual familiar to me, not surprisingly an unquestioning ally of X2B. I responded with a rational appeal to honor and reason, which, of course, failed.
And then I did what I had to do.
A scant 24 hours after I indicted the practice of serial “blocking” as the province of 14-year-olds, I ate crow. I went full bush-league. Blocking was the only tool available to me, and I used it.
But it didn’t end there.
A couple of hours later, a friend messaged me to say that she’d been sent screenshots of the earlier comments by arguably X2B’s closest friend. Clearly, the unsolicited message was meant to undermine my friend’s support. I suspect it wasn’t the only such message sent.
Another block. Sheesh.
The content of the original comments, by the way, was meaningless to me, regardless of the source but especially considering the source. It was made-for-social-media theatrics, clumsy and inarticulate. I didn’t give the words a second thought.
And so here we are.
That’s a lot more drama than you should ever have to read about on Ubi Libertas Blog. My apologies.
I do have my reasons, though, for sharing it with you.
First, I want to speak directly to those in a situation similar to mine: Don’t let this kind of bullshit make you question who you are. You have no reason to be ashamed or silent. Epithets and shifting allegiances change nothing. Stay the course.
Second — and this applies to all of us — standing in the light will always make you an easier target. Truth inevitably attracts dishonesty. Honor draws fire from the dishonorable. Expect the assault.
Finally, pick your battles. Stand the high ground. Hold your tongue. Don’t engage. If your adversaries insist on thrashing, let ’em thrash.
A social-media shitstorm isn’t worth your time. Don’t rise to the bait.
My Tuesday wasn’t spoiled by all this — it was made. Yeah, the whole blocking business was distasteful, but as it’s said of old men, “There are no weapons they will not use.”
Besides, few things are more satisfying to me than keeping my head while watching someone else lose theirs.
Smudge, as usual, woke me at 3am. I saw that the battery on her tracking gizmo was low and put it on the charger. Picking up my phone, I surfed into my social-media accounts to find no further hysterics.
I sipped hot coffee and finished this post. Outside my window, from starry black to dusty blue, a new dawn crept over The Mountain.
So my Wednesday began. Peace.
I’ll end this here. I have work to do today and, I’m happy to say, it’s in the real world and not a virtual one.
Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
