I had one more piece of pressing business to conduct in town, and I decided to take care of it late this morning. On my way out, toward the north end of the dirt-and-gravel subdivision road, I saw the vehicle ahead of me slow and move to the right.
Then I saw why — a horse and rider, along with a dog.
Since equestrian trails criss-cross the area, this wasn’t the first time I’d seen that sort of thing. But it isn’t exactly common, so to me it’s still kinda cool.
“Thank you!” shouted the rider, a fit young woman, as I crept by respectfully. I waved, giving her bay mount a good look before glancing over at her trail dog.
It wasn’t a dog.
She was out trail riding this morning with a goat, and a good-sized billy at that. I laughed out loud.
Goats are famously good companions for horses. It’s believed that they have a calming influence, thus the old English expression for agitation, “gets my goat.”
The encounter punctuated an otherwise ordinary day.
Tomorrow, April 19th, marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of this exceptional nation — “the shot heard ’round the world,” the battles of Lexington and Concord.
“If they mean to have a war, let it begin here.”
It’s the highest holy day of American commemorations, in my opinion, worth much more than a nod.
Remember.
Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
