Puny

Something wasn’t quite right with me Saturday morning. General weakness, aching joints, maybe “running a temperature,” as we used to say. In short, I didn’t feel well.

A hot shower (in the camper) didn’t help. A breakfast smoothie didn’t help.

I got moving anyway. I had stuff to do.

On my way to Mountain Home around 8am, the grogginess I was experiencing had me focusing intently on the driving — it was the damnedest thing. I picked up cement board and a little pine shelving at Lowe’s, then headed back west toward a 10am date with curbside pickup.

I swung by Casey’s in Gassville and bought a slice of breakfast pizza, which I hadn’t had in months, on the off chance it’d give me a boost. It didn’t.

Returning to The Mountain, I unloaded groceries — the first time I’d put everything away in the cabin — and then I went back to sleep.

The 75-minute snooze did me some good, but I knew that I still wasn’t up to starting the shower surround. Instead, I tackled another project.

The pine boards I bought at Lowe’s had a purpose. The frame forming the base of the kitchen counter has been bare (other than the sink and its platform) since I built it five months ago, and it was time to make good on its promise of storage.

The process went well, actually, despite my feeling puny. I knew what I wanted, and I had a pretty fair idea of how to get it done.

Once I’d finished, I loaded the shelves with largish cookware and countertop appliances that won’t be on top of the counter most of the time. Cleaning supplies were stowed under the sink, of course.

If that (pictured) looks cluttered to you, I remind you that your kitchen cabinets would look the same way if they didn’t have doors.

The big appliance on the counter to the left of the sink, by the way, is an Igloo icemaker, purchased originally for the motorhome. I’m surprised that I still have it, honestly. I figured it was left behind because it was broken or something.

I took it out for a test drive yesterday, and it works just fine. That’ll be handy, since my fridge doesn’t have an icemaker.

At the end of the day, I still felt crappy — but I checked another to-do off my list, and the cabin is better for it. I come into today now without expectations, playing it by ear, seeing how I feel.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
