A Sunday in May, all to myself

I’m feeling better, thanks.

The Mountain saw a couple of firsts yesterday. With the kitchen completely moved out of the camper now, I brewed my first pot of coffee in the cabin.

(Zoom in on that photo to see what time it was.)

Yes, it was a little awkward, going back and forth across the driveway, but I refuse to sleep in the cabin ’til the shower’s done. It was a cool moment, though, when I walked past the window in the darkness, on my way to pour the first cup, and saw the glow of life inside.

Later, I made my daily smoothie out there. That meant reinventing the process a bit, given that everything has been within arm’s reach in the camper’s tiny galley (and it’s not in the cabin).

Enjoying the result at my very own kitchen table: priceless.

I bounced back sufficiently from Saturday’s whatever-that-was to make use of the cement board that was still sitting in the bed of my truck. As I’ve said before, I hate working with this stuff, and yesterday’s project did nothing to win me over.

I made efficient use of the material I had, including a piece left over from mounting the water heater in November. The patchwork job soon will be covered by corrugated metal.

I applied waterproof tape to all the seams, too, because why not?

Exactly when I’ll install the tin, I can’t say for sure. It’ll run about 90 bucks. I’d like to pick it up tomorrow, so maybe Tuesday. Maybe not. We’ll see.

I’m in the home stretch now, heading for the wire. I believe that my attitude toward current circumstances — staying focused on every moment, living each day forward as it presents itself to me — has everything to do with why I’m still in the race.

Damn, I’m tired. It takes incredible energy and will to press forward. But exhausted though I am, I’ve never felt more alive.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
