Speechless (mostly)

I have nothing profound or significant to report from Sunday. The Heeler and I had a good and pleasant day. We got a little rain.

I’ll share a few images.

Every now and then, I describe how relatively large or small a thing is, maybe even include a photo, yet not convey its size in a way that helps you see it the way I do. One example would be the massive leaves on the princess tree growing on the lower level.

I chuckled the other day when a faraway friend said, “Oh, you mean like a catalpa.”

No, not like a catalpa — I mean like this:

And that isn’t even the biggest leaf on this tree. It was simply the handiest for a photo like that.

At the opposite end of the scale are blooms on the willowleaf lettuce plants. I believe I said they’re “smaller than a dime.” This is what I meant:

I find it interesting that these flowers are open only for a short time each day, and when they close or go to seed, they virtually disappear.

Almost all of the photos I’ve shown of Smudge lately have her looking all serious and intense. She definitely can be that way, but around me, most of the time she’s a lovable doofus.

She has a great smile — and as a truly happy Heeler, she smiles a lot.

I finally grabbed a shot of her being the goofball she is.

I’m always on the lookout for plants I haven’t seen before — flora in Ozarkansas differ greatly from that of the Midwestern woodlands where I spent most of my life — and on Sunday I spied a new species. I found it a few hundred yards east of the cabin.

That’s a roadside patch of American germander (Teucrium canadense) or “wood sage.” It’s native, often planted as an ornamental (though these are wild).

I may dig up a bit of this clump and see if I can get it to grow on the bank by the cabin.

I was surprised a few weeks ago when I heard the cashier at the Flippin Casey’s offering matches to her smoking customers.

Maybe I just don’t get out enough, but it feels to me like it’s been a very long time since I remember a merchant distributing books of matches.

Late lunch/early supper on Sunday was a man-sized salad, every bit the meal I intended.

Iceberg lettuce is still my favorite. To that I added cucumber, yellow onion, bacon bits and croutons. I topped it with ranch dressing, which I spiked with Mrs. Dash Extra Spicy.

No tomatoes.

I made the croutons, by the way, from several “heels” saved from loaves of sandwich bread. I toasted and cubed them, then tossed them in a Ziploc with seasoning.

That’s all for today.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
