Foggy freeze

Nobody I know would consider me “absent-minded.” I’m generally on top of things, my brain always turning and churning about something.

That’s why it was so strange to awake yesterday morning utterly vacant.

Seriously, my mind was a total blank. That never happens.

I’m not sure it was a bad thing. And it didn’t take long for my head to fill with thoughts of the day before me.

Also odd for a Sunday was an early morning visit to Harps in Yellville. I needed a couple of items that Walmart didn’t provide last week.

At that hour, Ozarkansas was under a “dense fog advisory.” The temperature also happened to be 26°F. Put the two together and it’s a recipe for a world frosted in white.

Sketchy traction on paved roads, too. Smudge and I made the trip without incident, however.

On our way back up The Mountain, we paused to be entertained by a flock of wild turkeys.

I counted nine.

A minute later, the driver’s side window was down and I was scanning these woods for fresh windfall. I hadn’t done that since the recent multi-day blow.

I spotted a couple of downed crowns just upslope from the roadside oak I harvested a year ago (and am still processing).

Miss Smudge and I relaxed awhile, then I brought the truck down to investigate the potential firewood I’d spied earlier. It was no bonanza, but it yielded enough to be worth the time and effort.

I sawed what I found into pieces about four feet long and pitched them down to the roadside. There, using the Silverado’s tailgate as a sawbuck, I cut my stove lengths.

Next winter’s pallet #5 got a nice boost.

The indoor firewood rack was almost empty when Smudge and I left for town. Fortunately, I didn’t need to feed the stove at all during the day Sunday, thanks to sunny skies over The Mountain, and my resupply run arrived in plenty of time for the evening burn.

And honestly, that’s all I have to say about yesterday.

Nothing’s amiss — everything’s fine. Life is good.
