I do as I please

Today’s header image is another look at Monday’s sunset, taken at the moment known as “last light.”

This post will be a quick one compared to what you’re used to seeing here. The reason is twofold, in a death-and-taxes sorta way:

  • A man’s gotta eat; and
  • A man’s gotta sleep.

Frankly, I haven’t been doing enough of either lately. Virtually all day Tuesday was devoted to both.

Smudge and I made a trip to town early. I did get a little work done. But for the most part, I refueled and recharged.

I’m well, thanks. Thanks to a little R&R, now I’m even better.

The ground rises steeply behind the cabin toward The Citadel, which is nestled in a grove of cedars. Two of those mature trees, I noticed yesterday, appear to be dead or dying — their crowns are sparse, and the foliage has taken on an orangish-tan color.

They rise from the same spot, towering over 40 feet above the rocky slope. Based on what I’ve learned about gauging the age of eastern red cedars, I’d put them at a hundred years old.

I don’t believe this is an endemic problem. Cedars are resilient, and it takes a lot to kill one. And though I can’t pinpoint the cause of these seeming to fail, I’d be willing to bet that the root systems were damaged somehow during excavation four years ago.

Of concern now is the potential that they could fall onto the cabin. They’re certainly within reach. I’ll keep an eye on them, and at some point I’ll bring them down myself in a controlled fashion.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
