A cleaner ride

I want to return briefly to the Bark River Knives debacle I talked about yesterday, in particular the reaction on social media. Previously, I referred to it as “shitposting” and “disturbing.” If anything, it’s gotten worse since I wrote that.

Don’t for a moment assume because I’m put off by the irrational, the vicious and the crude that I consider Mike Stewart’s actions to be anything but egregious. It’s just that almost all of the venom is supplied by people who really, truly, aren’t invested in this.

But y’know what they say — haters gonna hate. They know no other way.

I saw one comment, though, that I wholeheartedly endorse. A fellow from Tennessee said simply this:

“Y’all need to back away from the Internet, go outside and touch some grass.”

That’s called perspective. It means connecting with what’s real. It’s good advice.

I practice it every day.

“Touch some grass.”

Getting up early to see the summit of Hall Mountain catch the sun’s first rays in the morning.
Sharing a view of the valley with my happy Heeler.
Noticing a spray of white along the roadside…
…and taking time to appreciate spring’s first dogwood blossoms.
Savoring every sunset.

As for how I occupied myself on Tuesday, after returning from a trip to Flippin I dove into cleaning the interior of the Silverado. I’d neglected it over the winter, and it was high time to make it respectable again.

Shop-vac. Disinfectant wipes. Window cleaner. Febreze. It wasn’t a full-on detail, but it’s one helluva lot better than it was before.

And that was it — just the inside. The outside would remain suitably redneck-dirty.

Around 4:30pm, Smudge and I walked past the truck on our way back to the cabin. It really was filthy, covered in a thick layer of dust, inner fenders caked with mud. I got a wild hair, pulled out the pressure washer and made the Silverado as clean on the outside as it was on the inside.

Just water. No soap, no wax. It took all of 20 minutes.

I always used to be meticulous about my vehicles. That discipline suffered some the last 20 years, and it felt good yesterday to reclaim it.

Honestly, I think it’s who I am.

And see, that’s the thing about my spring-cleanup routine — with every day that passes, every item I check off my list, this life becomes more my own. My world is cleaner, more organized and better cared for than it’s been in a long time.

It’s great to be here.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
