Moving furniture (again)

It wasn’t on a list, but it was always in the back of my mind.

After a huge sheet of ice slid off of the cabin roof this winter and badly damaged two wooden chairs, I relocated one to the newly created Daybreak Point. The other remained in the back yard, awaiting its next assignment. I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do with it.

Sunday morning, I carried the chair and its footstool up the rock-strewn slope toward The Citadel. This is the picturesque perch:

A fitting throne, don’tcha think? Twenty or so vertical feet above the level of the driveway, here’s my view:

It’s the ideal spot to catch the sunset (most of the year), and I’ve done that many times. Now I don’t have to drag a folding chair up there.

I returned to the cabin, in the mood for a big breakfast (and a late one). I fried up some smoked sausage…

…and scrambled four eggs. My cackleberry cocktail included shredded cheese, along with onions and jalapeños I’d dried, plus garlic and a shake of Flatiron Pepper Company blend.

Once the eggs were fluffy and dry to my liking, I added back the sausage.

That went from my eBay aluminum skillet straight into a big thrift-store bowl, topped with a sprinkle of cheese and a dollop of salsa. Warm tortillas on the side.

That’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout. Great choice for a cool Sunday morning.

In a culture rife with apathy, entitlement and sloth, I admire young people who have what it takes to compete. Friends of mine in Oklahoma right now are cheering on their Texas grandkids as they play hockey at the championship level. Another friend this week watched her 18-year-old son finish 12th at the national powerlifting championships.

And for the sixth time in as many years, The Ohio State University Pistol Team has won the intercollegiate national championship. In the team competition, Buckeye shooters achieved the eight highest aggregate scores. When the match turned to individual shooting, Ohio State took four of the top five spots in Air Pistol, then swept the top eight in Sport Pistol and the top nine in Standard Pistol.

As of yesterday morning, 55 of 75 Arkansas counties had issued burn bans. The entire state is at “high” risk of wildfire.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
