Why didn’t I think of this before?
Smudge and I sat at the picnic table early Wednesday morning, just lovin’ life. I looked down toward the road, in the general direction of the well, and that’s when I saw it.
Three years ago, Jeff offered me an engine crate from one of his gearhead projects. I covered it with a Harbor Freight (camo) tarp — later supplemented by a trash bag — and put it to work shielding the generator that powered the camper. It provided shade from blazing sun and an umbrella when it rained.

Since then, it’s been idle. The tarp-and-trash-bag skin became tattered. Its wooden frame, however, remained intact.

Looking on it yesterday, it hit me that I’d been noodling various ideas for another target stand — maybe easel props, maybe a smaller version of what I built on Tuesday — when this retired generator shelter would fill the bill nicely.
I strapped it to the Ranger and trucked it out to the 35-yard range on the east slope.

A half-dozen deck screws secured a plywood disk to the crate. I set the improvised target stand in place and leveled it with rocks.

Here’s my view from the firing line:

I think it’s absolutely perfect.
Y’know, I may fiddle a little more out at Daybreak Point this spring and summer, but I believe I’ll call it good ’til fall. It’s time to reap the rewards of my labor.

Life is very, very good.
Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
