Let it be

When I moved to The Mountain, now almost three years ago, I resolved to give Nature a fighting chance to reclaim what was disturbed in the cause of human habitation. In short, I wanted this patch of land to become green again.

I cast grass seed over the lower level. Beyond that, I planted nothing else. I left things alone.

Vibrant growth has absolutely exploded. That comes with a few practical challenges, of course, like making sure that necessaries (like the burn barrel) remain clear. But the rewards are worth what little trouble they bring.

The images that follow all were captured over the last 48 hours within steps of the cabin. Some of this flora and fauna you’ve seen before. Much of it, however, is new — I just discovered it.

Violet bush clover (Lespedeza violacea).
Prairie tea (Croton monanthogynus).
Asian lady beetle (Harmonia axyridis), resting on an indeterminate aster, waiting for a meal.
Hop trefoil (Trifolium campestre).
Daisy fleabane (Erigeron strigosus).
Yellow sweetclover (Melilotus officinalis).
Rose vervain (Glandularia canadensis).
Whorled milkweed (Asclepias verticillata), aka horsetail.
Oxeye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare).
Queen Anne’s lace (Daucus carota).
Prickly sow-thistle (Sonchus asper).
Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia).
Eastern prickly pear (Opuntia humifusa).

It’s great to be here.

“There’s just one Schlitz, yeah, yeah,” went the old jingle. “Nothing else comes near. When you’re out of Schlitz, you’re out of beer.”

Well, now we’re officially “out of Schlitz.” I guess 177 years is a respectable run.

I never went out of my way to drink “The beer that made Milwaukee famous,” but damn, I wish American culture would quit killing off pieces of my childhood.

You know how I love the “breakfast pizza” served up by Casey’s General Store. Today, I decided to make my own.

I started by scrambling two of those wonderful local eggs…

…and then browned some breakfast sausage.

I buttered a small pizza crust and covered it with shredded “Fiesta Blend” cheese. On top of that went the eggs, followed by the crumbled sausage. I topped it with minced red onion and more cheese.

Into a 425°F oven it went for nine or ten minutes. It came out perfect.

Then I put jalapeño ketchup on it, right? Nope — I drizzled it with Sriracha.

Life is better than ever before.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
