When you just know

“I’ve gone to look for America.”

Paul Simon

Today is Day 383 of 15 Days to Flatten the Curve. Deb and I are ok.

It’s raining this evening. At least for a while.

We’ve been noticing the dogs’ mood since we returned Thursday. For a day or so they clearly were diggin’ the familiar turf, afterward slipping into a sort of canine malaise — not interested in much of anything, not even particularly playful.

This afternoon I busied myself in and around Ernie. I did a little cleanup, completed a couple of minor repairs, mounted a fire extinguisher in the bedroom and measured for screens to cover the exterior vents of the coach’s propane appliances. I researched and cross-referenced filters and parts we intend to stock in the basement.

Late in the day Deb brought Scout and Dipstick out for a visit. As soon as they set foot in the bus they became entirely different dogs. They bounced back and forth, jumping up on Deb and me and the chairs and the couches. They smiled dog smiles. Their playfulness was back.

It was obvious to us that they know — they just know they belong on the road.

Their display of joy and anticipation had me admitting that we’d suffered a letdown of our own over the last 48 hours. As much as we love our Second Chance Ranch, from the moment we shut the engine off we longed to get back out there.

We belong on the road, too. We just know.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
