Deadly compliance

At the end of yesterday’s post, “Satisfaction,” I implored readers to “apologize for nothing.” In that spirit, then, you can be absolutely sure that I won’t apologize for what I said or how I said it — I meant every damned word.

The firearm used in last weekend’s Buffalo massacre is getting attention because it fits progressives’ anti-Liberty narrative. It’s an Evil Black Rifle, one of those scary “assault weapons” that get liberals hyperventilating. And this gun was modified to make it even more assaulty.

A little background is in order here. After the Sandy Hook murders in December of 2012, the People’s Republic of New York pounced on the opportunity to enact even more repressive “gun control” statutes. The result was the NY SAFE Act, signed into law by Handsy Andy in January of 2013.

The new law further strangled citizens’ ability to exercise their natural right to keep and bear arms, creating lists of rifle and pistol features that got entire classes of firearms banned. A 1994 law limiting magazine capacity to ten rounds eventually was preserved, but not because Democrats didn’t try to take it lower — SAFE originally restricted magazines to seven rounds, a provision later ruled unconstitutional by a federal court.

On Saturday in Buffalo, the perpetrator deployed an Evil Black Rifle modified (illegally, of course) in a way that allowed it to accept a standard-capacity magazine, presumably one holding 30 rounds — just like those used throughout Free America for recreation, sport and hunting. The explanation for why that’s relevant isn’t what you’re being fed by mainstream media.

From what I’ve seen of the “manifesto” attributed to the murderer, he chose his target for three reasons. The first reflected his simmering hatred:

“[This ZIP code on the east side of Buffalo] has the highest black population percentage…”

The second was proximity to his home:

“[Buffalo] isn’t that far away.”

And what was his third reason?

“…New York has heavy gun laws so it would ease me if I knew that any legally armed civilian was limited to ten-round magazines or cucked [sic] firearms.”

We’ve been issuing warnings for years. Criminals (by definition) don’t obey laws. So-called “gun control” and “assault weapons bans” disarm only law-abiding citizens. Evil looks for soft targets.

Murderers love “gun-free zones.”

Our predictions tragically came true in Buffalo. Ten innocents are dead. A disturbed 18-year-old may have pulled the trigger, but the People’s Republic of New York created his kill zone.

And that retired cop who’s being hailed as a hero, the one who was killed after engaging the perp with his sidearm? Well, as a store security guard he would’ve been limited to ten rounds, too.

It’s not the first time that state law — and dutiful compliance with the law — got people killed. As long as we have Democrats and other progressives making anti-American laws, it won’t be the last.

When a federal ban on “assault weapons” took effect in 1994, it was a wake-up call for many American gun owners. Clinton was the president who signed it, but the real blame for gutting our birthrights belongs to two legislators. One of them, Dianne Emiel Goldman Berman Feinstein Blum, authored the bill. She still serves in the Senate.

The other, a notoriously sleazy Senator who cut back-room deals and rammed the legislation through, today occupies the Oval Office. And he’s still lying about the near-zero effect the ban had on crime.

That AWB was allowed to “sunset” in 2004. By then, Second Amendment advocates and most gun owners had learned their lesson — the feds were willing and, given fair political winds, quite able to ban an entire class of in-common-use firearms.

An unshackled firearms industry responded, some manufacturers more quickly and more ably than others, flooding the marketplace with Evil Black Rifles. Within five years the AR-15 platform was the most popular firearm in America, supplanting the 1911 pistol.

Today there are more than 25 million AR-15-style rifles in citizens’ hands, plus millions more AK-47s and other ban-bait. Sales spike whenever the prospect of “gun control” legislation makes news and in the months preceding a general election. In four years working behind the gun counter of a local firearms retailer, I’m sure I personally sold 800 or more AR-15s, AK-47s and the like.

Seven states and DC have their own AWBs, four of them enacted during the federal ban (fully expecting that it’d be allowed to expire). Most are based on an idiotic list of purely cosmetic features, and manufacturers have (wherever possible and profitable) created state-compliant models of their AR-15. Often they’re silly-looking guns, at least to those of us in Free America, a cartoonish fuck-you aimed at gun-grabbers.

A New York-compliant Bushmaster XM-15 was modified and used to commit ten murders Saturday in Buffalo. In the “manifesto” attributed to the perpetrator, he told us why he chose that gun:

“The effect it would have on social discourse, the extra media coverage they would provide, and the changes to gun laws that will be pushed will all help my case.”

Right on cue, the Left seized the media spotlight before the bodies were bagged, flogging a familiar narrative of racism and “gun control.” That’s exactly what the murderer hoped would happen.

Criminals want to see weapons banned, magazine capacity restricted, imaginary “gun-free zones” advertised with big ol’ signs (or, better yet, defined by state borders). That’s no surprise — why does the obvious elude so many liberals?

If you believe that gun laws will protect you, reflexively complying and expecting criminals to do the same, you’re a dead dumbass walking. And if you’re in favor of “gun control,” to any degree and in any form, you’re an enemy of Liberty and no friend of mine.

One year ago today: If I had to point to the day that we caught the spirit of The Ozarks — or when the sprit caught us — this would be it.

“I’m at peace,” Deb said to me.

That was the moment. We didn’t even know why.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
