The pleasure of it all

Musical accompaniment for our morning coffee was supplied today by a noisy (but tuneful) Carolina wren. A large red-headed woodpecker contributed the only way he knew how (percussion). In the coolness and the quiet, we watched through the trees as the sun rose. (To be honest, we also admired the soon-to-be-live electric pole directly in front of us).

Our Sunday was a mix of relaxation, puttering and a surprising development. I transferred Ernie (the tree) to a larger pot, introducing him to the soil of The Mountain. The motion lights on the shed, having passed their adequate-sunlight trial, got mounted permanently today. And because I hate guessing, I installed an analog gauge on each of the RV’s propane tanks.

Lately we’ve been giving Graceland portable buildings strong consideration for the house we’ll put on The Mountain. Deb’s been following one particular Missouri dealer on YouTube and has exchanged numerous messages with him. When she shot him a few more questions this morning, he offered to come and take a look at our site — as in today.

He and his wife were out for a Sunday cruise anyway, he said, and Yellville seemed like as good a destination as any. He spent about a half-hour with us — an efficient and informative visit, and a courtesy we’ll definitely remember.

Deb and I stayed out of the afternoon heat as much as our responsibilities would allow. I soaked up my fair share of conditioned air before deciding that I just had to get outside for a while. I walked down to the shed, pulled out a folding chair and set it up in the shady woods behind the outbuilding.

The air down there was maybe 15 degrees cooler than it was in the sun. I still could hear the generator, but the noise wasn’t bothersome. Turning my back on the shed, I immersed in the pleasure of trees and litter and ledges and life — simply noticing.

I really need to do this more often, I thought as I sat among the oaks and cedars. I mean, it’s all right here, mere steps away, this vibrant natural world, this marvelous backyard refuge.

It’d be a shame to squander it, y’know?

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
