Yes, my friends, we watched it.
We watched it all.
Today’s inauguration moved me. It reached past my caution, my stoicism and, quite frankly, my anger.
It exposed optimism.
Deep within me, somehow, it found hope.
I’ll remember this day for the rest of my Life.
Deb and I came into this special day through a trial of sorts. Around 3:45pm yesterday, our electric power went out. By 5pm, we had three generators running — two powering our freeze-prevention measures at the camper and cabin, one at the well shed down by the road.
Six-and-a-half hours later, we were back on the grid again. We’d kept our water supply from freezing, but by then the temperature in the living space had fallen into the low 50s.
And this would be the coldest night of the year (so far), bottoming out at 5°F, with a wind chill of -1°F.
We piled on blankets and stayed relatively comfortable. Scout and Smudge weathered it fine.
Maybe you think it’s absurd that we keep four portable generators. Maybe you roll your eyes whenever I talk about giving those generators their monthly exercise, or having a ready supply of gasoline on-hand, or even prepping in general.
Yesterday, we executed our plan to deal with a winter power outage. It took three generators to do what was necessary, and one of our four (the Firman) refused to start in the bitter cold. We re-fueled each one once. We had plenty of oil, too, just in case they ran low, but we didn’t need it.
In short, our preps paid off. Wrangling a trio of inverter generators in weather like that wasn’t the most pleasant way to spend Inauguration Eve, but it beat the hell outta dealing with frozen pipes and a shattered well head this morning.
Prepping just makes sense. Dismiss that at your peril.
Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
