Bonus post

Candidly, I was dreading today, what with having to rehab several crucial accounts and then shouldering them from now on. And I had just two business days to do it — the slightest complication could make things more problematic than they already are.

First and early, I called Entergy, my electric utility. The two customer-service representatives who handled my request were cordial, competent and efficient. Smooth as could be.

Check.

Then came the storage unit. It’s locally owned, so naturally the woman on the other end of the phone was sweet as sugar. She took care of me quickly and without issue.

Check.

Verizon was a bit of a different story. The phone rep certainly understood what I was asking for, but he was unable to process it because it involved wresting my line away from another plan, which required the approval of the account owner (my soon-to-be-ex-wife).

Predicting that might not happen as fast as it needed to, I saddled up and drove to the Verizon store in Mountain Home to deal with someone face-to-face.

And that turned out to be the right decision. The young man who waited on me got right down to business, and 15 minutes later I was on my way — same great phone, same great number.

Check.

I swung through the McDonald’s drive-thru in Gassville and ate by the White River in Cotter. From there, I drove to my Farm Bureau agent’s office in Yellville to remove a vehicle and a driver from my auto policy.

Check.

After I got back to The Mountain, I debated briefly about whether or not I should inform my ex-to-be that she and her vehicle no longer are covered under my policy. I could simply remain silent — after all, turnabout is fair play, right?

I’m not that guy. Honor won’t allow it. Let somebody else play that card.

I sent the text.

And what about resuming the Internet service I had? Hard pass. I’ve made other arrangements.

Maybe the best thing to come out of this personal-finance sideshow is that the net thump to my wallet was about 80% less than I expected.

What a great Monday it turned out to be!

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
